Illegal arms and drugs trade from Punjab jails
It is very worrying that a large number of mobiles and drugs are being caught from the jails of Punjab, in today’s era, jails have become a resting place for the convicts or undertrials who are facing punishment in different criminal cases. By paying money in jails, all kinds of intoxicants, mobiles and other items become common. Mobile culture is increasing day by day in the jails of Punjab. Due to this, many times cases of threats to people through social media by gangsters in jails keep coming to the fore. The surprising thing is that even the gangsters sitting in jail keep taking responsibility for the murders in Punjab. Recently, the Indian Coast Guard along with the ATS team of Gujarat Police seized drugs worth about Rs 200 crore from the ports of Gujarat. The DGP of Gujarat Police revealed that several drug syndicates are running from the jails of Punjab. He told that during the investigation it has come to the fore that criminals sitting in the jails of Faridkot, Amritsar, Kapurthala in Punjab are operating the drugs syndicate without fear. According to the police DGP, these drugs are imported from Pakistan and other countries by people associated with the syndicate in India. Consignments of drugs are being delivered to different cities of India through WhatsApp calls from jailed criminals mobile phones. A large consignment of drugs in cloth containers was seized last few months. In this also the link of the arrested accused was found in Faridkot Jail of Punjab.
A few days ago a video went viral in Punjab, in which the sarpanch of a village in Amritsar, Sukh Randhawa, was demanded to be registered by some people for some matter. After this, the sarpanch, who was in jail for five days, came out and made some revelations of the jail in front of the media. The sarpanch revealed in the camera that there is a large-scale drug trade in the jail. All kinds of intoxicants and mobiles are made available to the prisoners by paying money inside the jail. Sarpanch Sukh Randhawa told that the packet of intoxicating pill which is available for Rs 20, is available inside the jail for Rs 500. Mobiles that are available in the market for Rs 2000, mobiles inside the jail are sold for Rs 35000. 20 thousand mobile is made available in one lakh. Randhawa raised many questions about the complicity of the officials in the failed system of jail administration. Now raising their voice against this, they have started putting up sign boards on the highway road of the area. He said that the jail in which he has been staying for five days is built in about 65 acres. The Punjab government keeps on talking to the state to end drugs. He wants to question the government that the system of all the jails of the state is completely under the control of the government. First of all, the Punjab government should end the drug business running in the jails.
The thing to think about is that if the drug trade is going on openly in the jail. Mobiles are made available for a hefty amount. All this cannot happen without the connivance of the officials of the administration. In Punjab, mobile phones and narcotics are also caught from the prisoners inside the jails from time to time. During the special police raids from jails in the newspapers, the news of mobile and drugs being caught in large numbers is common. Reports of phone use by prisoners in jail are continuously coming out from Punjab. Despite the strictness of the jail administration, a large number of prisoners are using phones in the jail. The repeated occurrence of such incidents is now raising questions on the security arrangements of the jail authorities. Once again mobile phones were recovered from the inmates of Faridkot Central Jail. In August, around 40 mobile phones were recovered from the Faridkot Central Jail. Due to this, a case was registered against 23 prisoners.
Like Faridkot Central Jail, a similar incident was reported from Patiala Central Jail on 7 August. During the raids by the police department, 19 keypad phones were recovered from the jail by the officials. The important thing is that all these phones were kept hidden inside the walls of the jail and small holes made in the ground. This shows how corrupt the system has become. Several cases of seizure of mobile phones, cash and drugs have come to light from this jail in a few weeks. Due to the continuous recovery of such a large number of mobile phones in Punjab jails, questions also arise about the security arrangements of the jail authorities. Despite the strictness and vigilance of the Punjab government, how the prisoners are able to use mobile phones inside the jail. These incidents have exposed the flaws in the security system of the jail. The lack of knowledge of the administration about the easy access of the banned items to the prisoners in the jails of Punjab is a matter of great concern.
To break the nexus of gangsters and criminals operating from the jails of Punjab, the government launched a special campaign from March 16 to May 10. Under this special drive, the police have so far recovered 710 mobile phones from the jails. Meanwhile, in order to root out the VIP culture from the jails, the Punjab government has decided to dismantle all the VIP cells and convert them into administrative blocks. A few days ago, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann told the media that these mobile phones were used by gangsters and smugglers to conduct their proceedings from jails. The Chief Minister said that special investigation is going on to nab the persons in whose name these phone numbers are being held in jails. Strict action will be taken against such people soon. Bhagwant Mann has also said that the responsibility of the officers and staff of the jails of Punjab from where mobiles have been recovered will also be fixed.

Now it remains to be seen how the corrupt system in jails will be rectified. Will the government be able to stop the illegal drug trade and criminal activities going on in the jails of Punjab. This will be known in the future. But to stop all this, the people of Punjab will also have to come forward and cooperate with the administration. The whole of Punjab is saddened and worried by the growing drug trade.
